Mail-transport steamer from the shipping company Antonio López y Compañía bound for the Antilles and transporting the San Marcial military battalion, ran aground on the coast of the island of La Gomera on March 5, 1862. Before he had suffered a breakdown in the machine. It was repaired, but a leak was later discovered which, despite the efforts of the crew and the bilge pumps, reached close to the stoves. Faced with this situation, the approach to the coast and the evacuation of the boat were ordered. The Russian warship Rinde was in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which volunteered to pick up the military forces that were traveling in Cantabria, the crew, passengers and correspondence, as well as to try to rescue it. Queen Elizabeth II granted recognition to the Russian commander and the rest of the Rinde officers. The City Council of San Sebastián de La Gomera installed in February 2013 on Avenida Marítima in the capital, the propeller of the steamer 'Cantabria'.
