CAPRERA

The Mediterranean coast of the Iberian Peninsula was widely used by Allied merchant ships during the First World War as a transit route given the Spanish neutrality during the conflict. Therefore, the commanders of the German submarines included it as one of the main hunting points. Specifically, in the waters near the Alicante coastal city of Villajoyosa, the German submarine U64 attacked and sank 6 merchant ships. The Caprera, a mixed Italian ship for the transport of cargo and passengers, converted in February 1917 into an armed auxiliary cruiser, after installing four guns, two on each side, was torpedoed by the U64 on February 5, 1918 at about two miles of land off Cape Huerta, resulting in the propeller and rudder being destroyed. Her wreck is 70 meters deep.
