HOLE GALEON

In the breaking zone of the waves, in front of the Agujero beach, on the island of Gran Canaria, are the remains of a modern wooden ship. It could be a ship of the frigate, corvette, brig or deep-draft type that must have run aground in the area and whose chronology could be framed around the middle of the 17th century. At the bottom of the sea, at a depth of 4 to 7 meters, still rest the cannons that it used (14 pieces), and part of the lining of the hull, in an advanced state of degradation and which is practically camouflaged with the seabed. The remains of the wreck were found in 1970 by a resident of Gáldar, when he was diving in the area. They are completely upholstered by encrusting algae, sponges, anemones, and many small fish characteristic of rocky and stony bottoms. A very intense swell, and the wind and the sea currents make access and visibility difficult due to the turmoil that the bottom can be, and the algae in suspension. The difficulty of the dive is high. For experienced divers. At present it has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest by the Island Council of Gran Canaria.
