SS FERRONA

The SS FERRONA IMO137411 was a merchantman with the English flag and Liverpool registration, 121.5 meters long by 15.5 meters deep, and 4,590 registered tons.
It was built by Short Brothers. Ltd. in Sunderland, slip number 378 and delivered in November 1914.
It was a classic four holds with between decks plus the additional one between the bridge and the machine, it had a single chimney on the structure of the machine. It was powered by a 1,980 IHP triple expansion reciprocating steam engine powered by three coal-fired water-tube boilers that gave it a load service speed of 9 knots.

When it was sailing in ballast en route from Marseille to Gibraltar off Valencia, on 10/28/1917 it was attacked and sunk by the German submersible U 64. A stoker died in the attack, saving the rest of the crew.
The ship sank 10 miles to the NE of Grao in a position 39º28'N and 0º10'W. This position was the one reported by the German commander Robert Moraht to his superiors in the patrol report upon arrival at his base in Pola.
Curiously enough, the hunter was hunted a few months later: while on a submerged patrol in the Sicilian channel, he was attacked by the HMS LYCHNIS, making it surface, sinking it with cannon fire at position 38º07'N and 10º.27'E. As a result of the combat, 38 crew members died and five were saved.
